The Engineering Onsite and Staff Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the Engineering staff, assisting the guests, and other staff in maintaining, repairing and/or upgrading all Sonnenalp Resort of Vail (SRV) equipment and the building facilities (including any property managed by SRV).  This position will be backup for the SRV Assistant Chief Engineer position and will require knowledge of the SRV hotel building and its equipment.  This will include staff supervision and assistance to the Chief Engineer and Assistant Chief Engineer to ensure the satisfaction of our guests.  Maintaining all facilities in a quality manner consistent with budget parameters is of the utmost importance.


Recommended Skills and Qualifications:

He/she must have at least 5 years experience in a hotel or similar environment. Technical experience should include:


  1. HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems and controls high-level skills.
  2. Must be familiar with boilers, chillers, and refrigeration equipment and controls. 
  3. Practical experience should include:  painting, drywall repair, carpentry, and other miscellaneous maintenance duties.
  4. Should be familiar with pool, hot tub and spa equipment operations.  CPO certified is preferred.
  5. Should be familiar with commercial kitchen and commercial laundry equipment repairs.
  6. Room maintenance and repairs, including: floor heat, gas fireplaces, light fixtures, switches, locks, bathroom fixtures, doors, windows. TV, DVD, mini-refrigerator and safes.
  7. Must have good diagnostic skills and know when to call in an outside contractor.
  8. Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record.
  9. Must be proficient in, e-mail, web searches, writing memos, and Microsoft office programs.


Must have the following supervisory skills: 

  1. Good communication skills.
  2. Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize concurrent jobs.
  3. Good at coordination and follow-through with outside contractors.
  4. Have the ability to lead by example and teach by "showing", using a "hands-on" approach to supervision.
  5. Encourage and enhance employee accountability.
  6. Be able to work with employees and guests in a professional and courteous manner.
  7. Be a self-starter and work with limited support.



Provided with "on the job" training by the Chief Engineer or other qualified Engineering personnel.  In some instances, the Chief Engineer will approve outside professional training classes or seminars.


Typical Physical Demands:


Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull material weighing up to 75 pounds. Must be able to work under conditions requiring prolonged standing, lengthy walking, frequent bending, stretching, crawling through tight spaces and working up to roof top level.  Requires the ability to distinguish colors and symbols.


Typical Working Conditions:


The position requires frequent exposure to dust, dirt, noise, water and chemicals. He/she will be required to work outside in all weather conditions. He/she will be required to work overtime as needed, may be required to work evenings and weekends, and may be required to be on call during some weekends or holidays.


Responsibilities: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned)




  1. Daily maintenance including: daily rounds, checking gauges and operation of  boilers, water temperatures, circulating pumps, water and electric meters, steam boiler blow down, compressors, and air handlers, etc.
  2. Complete work orders assigned by Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer or Engineering Assistant.
  3. Be responsible for planning in advance and scheduling ahead for various seasonal and special projects in order to have adequate extra help or have contractors available when needed.
  4. Coordinate, oversee, and follow-through work done by outside contractors.
  5. Order major parts, equipment and tools for all SRV facilities.
  6. Respond to guests in a friendly, helpful and professional manner at all times.
  7. Perform and develop preventative maintenance for all SRV facilities and equipment
  8. Attend meetings when necessary.
  9. Be able to be a substitute for the Chief Engineer and Assistant Engineer's duties during their days off.
  10. Must be able to assist co-workers and Chief Engineer and Assistant Chief Engineer in all functions of the SRV Engineering Department'on and off site.
  11. Supervision, overseeing and coordination of staff.
  • Inspect, evaluate, and follow-up on employee's work (including every day tasks, PMs, etc.).
  • Train new engineering staff and evaluate new employee readiness for handling all engineering calls, especially for working alone on a night shift.
  • Review, prioritize, and assign outstanding work orders and tasks.
  • Be willing to deal with and follow through with personnel issues, including reward and disciplinary actions, and employee complaints.


  1. Able to use and interpret MP2 Work Order System and the Trane Communication heating and cooling system.
  2. Follow all emergency, safety and sanitary procedures precisely
  3. Maintain organized shop, mechanical rooms, work areas and storerooms.
  4. Perform any further duties as required by the Chief Engineer.




  1. Speaking Spanish is helpful, but not required.
  2. May be required to occasionally make parts or supply runs.
  3. May be required to attend seminars and/or training.
